People can out more about the work of community groups in their local area as part of a’ Volunteer Fair’ in Blackburn today.
The event at the Community CVS next to Blackburn railway station will mark the start of National Volunteers Week (June 1 to 7).
More than 20 groups from the borough will be hoping to use the fair to recruit volunteers that are the lifeblood of their activities.
Schani Tierney, formerly a Lead Volunteer with ROOTS Community and now employed by Red Rose Recovery, said: “I started volunteering with ROOTS around 5 months ago.
“As part of my recovery from substance misuse, it was important for me to volunteer so I could get involved with the community and help it in whichever way I could rather than destroying it as I had been doing over the last 20 plus years.
“ROOTS provided me with the opportunity to develop and grow as a person. I knew that if I could get others involved and conduct myself in the right way I could maybe have a future.
“That turned out to be true. I have just got a job with Red Rose Recovery on the back of my volunteering.
“I will be at the Volunteers Fair, helping ROOTS recruit more volunteers. I know its value and the positive changes it can make to people. I’m living proof of that.”
Volunteering Manager at Community CVS, Kate Lee, added: "Volunteering is a good place to start whether you're using your own lived experience and recovery from a dark place, or helping out behind the scenes.
“Volunteering is a great way to help themselves and others. If you'd like to learn more about how volunteering can help you, find out about the diverse range of opportunities and meet some amazing, kind, caring people then come along and join us."
The Volunteer fair runs from 10am until 2pm on Thursday, June 1, and is open to all age groups. Snacks and refreshments are available.
