The family of a “wonderful guy” who was seriously injured when he was hit by a car have launched a fundraiser to help pay for his rehabilitation.

Tomek Wojtas, 39, suffered a serious head injury and brain damage when he was struck by a Ford Ka in Clitheroe on April 25.

Initial tests showed two large brain haemorrhages and a hematoma around his eyeball.

Tomek was initially placed in a coma, but after what was described as a “miracle” by his wife Agnieszka, he woke up and has been fighting to be fit enough to return home since.

Speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph, Agnieszka said: “The accident happened in front of our house when he was returning home from shopping. I didn’t see the accident itself, I only heard how the car hit someone.

“I looked out the window and there was Tomek lying. I ran out of the house and there were already a few people who gave him first aid.”

Tomek, who worked as a chef at Holmes Mill in Clitheroe, is currently waiting for surgery as he had two bones removed due to a large swelling on his brain.

In a few months he will have plates inserted and he will wear a neck collar due to a broken second vertebrae.

On setting up the fundraiser, Agnieszka said: “This fundraiser was suggested to me by a friend. I started it to be able to calmly rehabilitate Tomek to help him return to as normal a state of health as possible.

“We don’t know how long this fight will last. However, we know that it will be long months of rehabilitation, special needs, and rising costs.

“We have two wonderful children who want to get back a healthy and fit dad to be able to play football with him once more.”

Tomek and Agnieszka have been living in Clitheroe for seven years and will soon celebrate their 13th wedding anniversary. They have two children, a 13-year-old son and an 11-year-old daughter.

The fundraising page has a target of £5,000 and is currently on £610 from 41 donations. If you wish to donate, click here.
