A town in East Lancashire has been named as the place in the UK with the worst weather, according to new figures.
Research has found Burnley received the joint lowest score of anywhere in the country when it comes to good weather.
It’s location at the foot of the Pennines means the town is primed for more rain and less sun than the rest of the UK, according to the data compiled by energy comparison site Utility Bidder.
It tied as the worst place in the country for weather with Manchester, well known for being grey and wet far more often than it’s population would like.
The research analysed how many hours of sunshine each location gets per year, along with average annual rainfall and days where more than one millimetre of rain falls, to produce a weather score out of 10.
Burnley scored lowest, with just 1,378 hours of sun per year, 1,315mm of rain a year, and 175 days of rain in excess of 1mm, almost half the year.
This all adds up to a weather score of 0.2, the joint-worst in the country with Manchester, which while getting 113 fewer hours of sun, also has 118mm less rain and four less days of 1mm or more rain.
Preston placed third on the list, with a slightly better score of 0.55.
At the other end of the scale was Southend-on-Sea which scored 9.86 out of 10, with just 527mm of rain per year. It also gets more than 500 more hours of sun per year and it rains just 102 days a year.
The research looked at the UK’s top 50 most populated towns and cities, and analysed Met Office weather data from the last 30 years.
Cities sharing a weather station or stations with incomplete data were removed and replaced with the next most populated locations to complete the list.
A Utility Bidder spokesperson added: “The UK area with the worst weather is a crown shared between two Northern locations.
“Between 1991 and 2020, Burnley averaged more rainfall and more days of rainfall than any other UK area.
“To make matters worse for those living in Burnley, just three areas of the UK have less sunshine hours each year.”
