A warning has been issued after groups of children have been spotted swimming in reservoirs.

Police in spotted two groups of children swimming in reservoirs around Chorley, including Heapey, yesterday (May 21).

A spokesperson for the police said: “We know the weather is sunny and getting warmer but we would like to remind you that open water swimming can be very dangerous, and we would not like for anyone's summer to be ruined through getting injured by swimming in lakes or reservoirs.

“Chorley has many other safer options for helping you spend time outdoors, as well as indoor pools which we would really encourage you to use instead of cold and risky reservoirs for your own safety and wellbeing.

“Please also remember that should you be found swimming in reservoirs or lakes parents will be spoken to.”

Dylan Ramsay, 13, died in 2011 after entering the water at Hill Top Quarry, Whittle-le-Woods.

His mother Rebecca has since been campaigning to warn people of the dangers of swimming in open water.

When the weather warms people sometimes get into difficulties after jumping into the canals and rivers to cool down.

Of the 400 people who drown in the UK every year, more than half the fatalities happen at inland waters such as canals, rivers, lakes, quarries and reservoirs.
