A man went on an overnight crime spree just weeks after being released from prison.

Blackburn magistrates heard Robert Wallace and another man were caught on CCTV breaking into various businesses in Burnley.

Wallace was identified from the security footage but the other man was unknown and had not been arrested.

Wallace, 32, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to burglary at Townley Street Chippy, The Swan and Goose at Reedley Marina and Queen Victoria Restaurant, Queen Victoria Road, and attempted Burglary at Paradise Working Mens Club on Martin Street. He was jailed for 12 months.

Imposing an immediate jail sentence, District Judge Alexandra Preston described the defendant's offending as a crime spree.

"You caused damage, loss and inconvenience to multiple businesses," she added.

Steven Botell, prosecuting, said at the chip shop external and internal doors had been kicked in and a mobile phone and a till taken.

Tills and a bottle of gin were taken from The Swan and Goose after a door was forced open. The back door of the Queen Victoria was forced and three tills taken although none contained any ash.

At the Paradise Club shutters had been damaged and the CCTV showed Wallace and the other man trying to gain entry.

"Security footage from each of the locations showed two men and one of them was identified as the defendant," said Mr Botell.

Mark Williams, defending, said burglary wasn't usually the kind of thing his client got involved in. He said while Wallace was serving his last prison sentence his father died and when he came out, two weeks before the offences, he had nowhere to live.

"He was on the streets and says he was desperate," said Mr Williams. "He met the other person and got involved in these offences."
