A WOMAN tried to throttle her partner with a towel during a row over work being done on their bathroom.

Blackburn magistrates heard the row started over the phone and in texts before a physical confrontation at their home.

Shazia Hussain, 31, of Meins Road, Blackburn, admitted to assaulting Paul Loftus. She was given a 12-month community order with a 25-day rehab activity requirement. She was also made subject to a 24-month restraining order and ordered to pay £200 compensation with £85 costs.

Antonia Waters, prosecuting, said the argument was over work on the bathroom at their home.

“He wasn’t happy she was leaving the workmen in the property unsupervised,” said Miss Walters. “When he came home the argument continued and culminated with her wrapping a towel around his neck and pulling it tight. She was initially charged with intentional strangulation but there was no loss of breathing and the charge was reduced to assault.”

Miss Walters said the victim said the relationship was over and he requested a restraining order.

Gareth Price, defending, said his client had no previous convictions.

He said the pre-sentence report prepared for the magistrates highlighted the challenges his client had been experiencing with her mental health.

“She was affected by the state of the house due to the ongoing work that was being done,” he added.
