An Accrington mosque was the venue for a health event which aimed to create more awareness of bowel cancer.

It was held as part of Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in April and took place at the town's biggest mosque - the Raza Jamia Masjid.

Mayor of Hyndburn, Cllr Abdul Khan, officially opened the health day on Sunday (April 30) which was held in partnership with Macmillan, Lancashire Bowel Cancer Screening Team and Raza Jamia Masjid’s management team.

Attendees got the chance to have a health check and find out more about issues relating to cancer, dementia and women’s health.

And more than one hundred people had their blood pressure checked.

Lancashire Telegraph: A 'Bowel Cancer Awareness' event was held at the Raza Jamia Masjid in Accrington

Cllr Abdul Khan said: “This was an amazing event and much needed within the community here.

“It was important for people to discuss issues to bowel cancer and I think culturally we do not do that enough.

“It was a great turn and lots of stalls and I would like to thank the organisers and the venue for hosting this event.”

Shakil Salam, from Lancashire Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, said: “This was first ever event at Raza Jamia Masjid in Accrington  and many families came to seek information and advice. Blood pressure check ups were very popular.

"This was a perfect opportunity to bring the community together to access a range of service providers from health, social, community and voluntary sectors all under one roof.

“After the success of the event the Mosque Management Committee has offered us to host a regular health and wellness event.

"It was really important to highlight the importance of health, and help the local community understand their own health needs and, importantly, that we are here to support them and community has welcomed us with open arms

“I would like to thank everyone who took part including all the stall holders, Mayor and Mayoress of Hyndburn and the local community for supporting us. Special thanks to Raza Jamia Masjid management team and volunteers.”
