NEARLY 50 homes were without a telephone line after an underground cable was damaged on the Darwen Academy construction site.

At its peak, 48 faults were reported to communications provider BT on Monday.

BT said contractors completing excavation work damaged an underground cable on Redearth Road between 3 and 4pm.

BT is working to repair the fault and was restoring customers one by one throughout yesterday, with full service expected to be restored by early today.

The roads which have been affected by the damage are Cross Barn Grove, Cross Barn Walk, Spring Meadows, Prince Lee Meadows, Sough Road, Turncroft Road, St Aidan's Avenue, St Peters Close, Holker Street, St John's Avenue and Melita St.
