The headteacher of a Barnoldswick primary school is delighted after receiving a ‘good’ Ofsted rating.

St Joseph's Catholic Primary School in Barnoldswick received a ‘good’ Ofsted rating after being inspected on February 22.

The inspector made many positive comments about the school saying the pupils work hard and that they have a good relationship with staff.

The report said: “Pupils work hard to meet the high expectations that leaders and staff have of their academic achievement and personal development.

“Pupils strive to live up to the school values of trust and friendship. Pupils benefit from positive relationships with staff.  If bullying should happen, leaders deal with it quickly and effectively. Staff have high expectations of pupils’ behaviour.

“Leaders promote and develop a love of reading well across the school.

“Leaders have constructed a curriculum that is ambitious for all pupils.”

The report has also highlighted areas for improvement. In some subjects leaders have not considered how some of the key knowledge that children learn in the early years is built upon effectively in the year 1 curriculum.

The report says: “Pupils repeat some concepts that were taught in the reception year in year 1.

“In these subjects, some pupils do not deepen their knowledge in year 1 as well as they should.”

Headteacher Natalie Wood said she is delighted by the report.

She said: “I am delighted that the inspectors recognised that St. Joseph’s Catholic Primary School is a good school where children feel happy and are confident that staff will listen to their worries.

“The staff are very dedicated and work diligently to ensure all pupils are safe and are challenged.

“I am very proud to be the headteacher of St. Joseph’s and be supported by my staff and governing body to provide an ambitious curriculum and ensure our children reach their potential.

“We want the pupils to build their confidence and develop their understanding so that they can play a role in society in the future.

“St. Joseph’s school has supportive families and strong links with the local community and St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

“Our children are delightful and eager to learn. This makes our job of teaching, our vocation, one that is both enjoyable and very rewarding.”

The school recieved a 'good' rating in 2013 and was rated as 'outstanding' in 2009.
