Six people were arrested for a range of offences after yesterday’s East Lancashire derby, which saw Burnley FC beat their rivals Blackburn Rovers 1-0 at Ewood Park.

Lancashire Police’s operation continued throughout the night after the derby last night (April 25) after police say a minority of people, sadly, behaved inappropriately.

Four people were arrested during the match, won by the Clarets, which saw them seal the EFL Championship title at the home of their bitter rivals, do the league double over the Rovers, and also heaped further pressure on Rovers as they scrap with seven other teams for the two remaning spots in the play-offs.

A 35-year-old man from Chatburn and a 42-year-old man from Lower Darwen were both arrested in Ewood Park on suspicion of common assault.

Another man was arrested on suspicion of pitch encroachment, while a 33-year-old man from Blackburn was arrested in Blackburn town centre on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Following the conclusion of the game, an 18-year-old man from Leyland and a 17-year-old man from Poulton-Le-Fylde were arrested outside the stadium on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly.

Police are aware of missile throwing before, during and after the game, and say this will be thoroughly investigated by officers and officials from both football clubs.

Footage will be reviewed and the appropriate action will be taken against anybody involved.

Supt Melita Worswick, who was Gold Command for the fixture, said: “I would like to thank the vast majority of supporters for their exemplary behaviour during what was a fiercely contested and passionate derby fixture.

“Unfortunately, a handful have individuals have let themselves and their football clubs down by their extremely disappointing behaviour.

“I would also like to thank our officers and colleagues from partner agencies who have worked extremely hard to ensure the fixture passed off without too much incident.”
