People can find out more about how to spot the early signs of cancer and other health conditions at a free wellness day in Accrington.
The event, which is open to everyone in the town, is being held at Raza Jamia Mosque, in Lower Antley Street, on Sunday, April 30, from 12pm to 4pm.
Organised by Lancashire Bowel Screening Programme and Macmillan Cancer Support, it aims to raise awareness of cancer and other conditions, and the importance of early intervention, as well as the help that is available locally when someone receives a diagnosis.
People can get blood pressure and health checks along with advice from the Bowel and Breast Cancer Screening Services, Lung Care and Gynae Care teams, Heart Health team and Macmillan Cancer Support.
They will be joined by the Quit Squad, Carers Link Lancashire, Aawaz Group, Community Rail, Diabetes UK, Harri Bus, Lancashire MIND, Mindsmatter and Health Watch Lancashire.
Shakil Salam, from Lancashire Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, said: “This event is open to everyone in Accrington, and the surrounding area, and we want to bring the community together to access a range of service providers from health, social, community and voluntary sectors all under one roof.
“We’re hoping to overcome any language barriers, and cultural differences or concerns, to encourage people to look after themselves and get checked out.
"We want to highlight the importance of health, and help the local community understand their own health needs and, importantly, that we are here to support them.”
Refreshments will be served, and complimentary therapies, such as hand massages, will be offered to all attendees.
There will also be children’s activities, including fun and games and a colouring competition.
The Mayor of Hyndburn, Councillor Abdul Khan, will officially open the community wellness day at 1pm.
Cllr Khan, who has chosen Macmillan as one of his charities of the year, added: “It has been a great honour for me to work with and promote Macmillan, which is a charity very close to my heart for family reasons.
"I hope as many people as possible, of all ages and backgrounds, attend the ‘wellness day’ to understand and access the vital help and support that is available for them to lead much healthier and happier lives.”
