A MAN was assaulted in the street after he tried to break up a fight, police said.

Police have arrested five youths over the attack, where the man was punched in the face at the junction of Pine Street and Barkerhouse Road, Nelson.

The man went out into the street in the early hours of Saturday morning when he realised his car had been damaged in the fight.

He suffered cuts to his head when he was punched.

Passing police officers saw the attack and arrested the five youths, aged 17 to 19, who are being questioned over their involvement.

Sergeant Mark Baines said: "The aggrieved heard a disturbance outside.

"Because he saw his vehicle being damaged he went out to remonstrate with these people.

"Members of this group have assaulted him.

"He had cuts to his head.

"Luckily some police officers were passing at the time and five people have been arrested.

"They are currently in custody."
