A Longridge man armed himself with an axe after row at the town's Old Oak pub.
Michael Potter had earlier sought to act as a peacemaker, trying to quell a disturbance, Preston Crown Court heard.
Later he spotted two men in the street, one with a knife. He went home and picked up anaxe, intending to frighten them, the court was told.
Potter, 52, of Preston Road, who pleaded guilty to affray, was given thirteen weeks jail, suspended for 18 months, with 18 months supervision.
