A drink driver who collided with a parked car denied being involved, despite a witness following him because of the erratic nature of his driving.

Blackburn Magistrates' Court heard that following his arrest nearby, Sean Christopher Rigby gave a breathalyser reading more than three times the legal limit.

Rigby, 50, of Cottage Close, Clitheroe, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol, namely that on February 4 in Pendle Road, Clitheroe, he drove a Citroen C2 while drunk.

He blew 113 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath, more than three times higher than the legal limit of 35mcg per 100ml of breath.

He was made subject to a community order for 12 months with 15 days Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and 100 hours unpaid work.

He was also banned from driving for 24 months and ordered to pay £85 costs and £114 victim surcharge.

District Judge Alexandra Preston told him: "You should be grateful you didn't or kill someone driving in such a terrible state.

"You were obviously very drunk and that is born out by the standard of your driving."

Carl Gaffney, prosecuting, said the entire incident was witnessed by another motorist.

He noticed the car in front, driven by Rigby, being driven erratically and followed it into Pendle Road and accelerated up the hill.

"He formed the view the driver was drunk before he saw the car hit a parked vehicle," said Mr Gaffney.

"The air bag in the defendant's car was activated and there was smoke billowing from the bonnet.

"The witness went to check the driver was alright and he got out of the car, said it was nothing to do with him and walked away."

Rigby, who was not represented, said his behaviour had been stupid and he wanted to apologise to everyone concerned.
