An East Lancashire cricket club is preparing to reopen after a burst pipe forced its closure, costing thousands.

Nelson Cricket Club, on Surrey Road in Nelson, closed for more than three months after the venue flooded back in December. This was caused by a pipe that had burst during a cold snap.

A video shows the venue’s floor covered in water with more water dripping through the ceiling.

Chairman, Jason Waddington, said the club has lost around £30,000 through cancelled event bookings and refurbishments are estimated to have cost around £60,000.

He said: “As a cricket club we sustain ourselves through event and party bookings. As a result of the damage we haven’t been able to hold any.

“In the last eight weeks we have lost 34 functions which has cost us thousands.

“We also can’t claim any of that lost income back through insurance.

“Local sports clubs are suffering as it is and we just didn’t have any money in the pot. With the cost of living crisis, it is the last thing we needed.”

After managing to secure some funding, the team have been working to restore the venue and bring it back to life.

It is set to reopen at the start of the cricket season on April 16 but it won’t be “fully operational”.

Jason said: “Following what has felt like a long period of uncertainty we are pleased to confirm that the refurbishment work is now well under way and we are looking forward to the start of the season and welcoming you all back soon.

“I am still trying to source some new furniture which I estimate will cost me an extra £20,000.

“However, customers will be able to return to a brand new business. It will look totally different once everything is sorted.

“We have lost a lot of business and just hope people will come back and support us once everything is sorted.

“The club will issue an update about the grand opening when we have more information.”
