THE coronation of His Majesty King Charles III will be screened live at Clitheroe Castle.

It will be shown on a big screen at the bandstand in the grounds of the historic building which dates from 1186.

His Majesty will be crowned on the morning of May 6 alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort in Westminster Abbey.

Local people can then take part in a raft of celebratory events, including street parties called the Big Lunch on May 8 and community support events called the Big Help Out,on May 9.

The iconic Clitheroe Castle, once owned by the Monarch's Duchy of Lancaster, will also be lit up red, white and blue during coronation weekend.

As well as organising the live screening, Ribble Valley Council is waiving road closure charges for coronation street parties and giving out £500 grants to parish councils to help them commemorate the event.

The Big Help Out on May 9 is aimed at encouraging people to get involved in volunteering.

The borough is offering parish councils and community groups litter-picking sticks and refuse sacks to clean up their neighbourhoods, and will collect the sacks afterwards.

The last coronation in the UK was that of Queen Elizabeth II on June 2, 1953, which was the first major world event to be broadcast internationally on television.

Ribble Valley Council chief executive Marshal Scott said:“The coronation is an opportunity for communities to come together and celebrate a landmark event that will be broadcast around the world.

“Sharing friendship, food and fun gives people more than just a good time – they feel less lonely, make friends and become more involved with their community – while the Big Help Out will bring them together to create a volunteering legacy from the coronation.

“We invite our communities to celebrate the coronation in any way that feels right for them.”
