A TikTok video, showcasing the shocking number of potholes on an East Lancashire road, has gone viral.

The video creator, who wishes to remain anonymous and is known only as RookieRider, filmed himself travelling down Burnham Gate, in Burnley, on a motorbike.

The council say repair work will be carried out on this road in the coming months.

In the video, which has received 1.3 million views at the time of writing, we can see the road and roundabout near the Angel Inn pub covered in potholes.

In the video he points out the potholes and says: “Look at the state of this. What is going on?

“Burnley Borough Council what are you playing at? Look at the state of it.

“I don’t mean to whinge but that is unacceptable. You have to pay to have MOT tests to make sure your vehicles are fit for the road.

“The roads aren’t event fit for the vehicles.”

RookieRider said the road was dangerous for cyclists and motorcyclists like himself.

He said: “The road is quite unpleasant to use as it’s not just a single pothole there isn’t much of the road left to ride on!

“The condition is not suitable for vehicles and is dangerous for any road users, especially cyclists and motorcyclists.”

RookieRider said travelling on roads like these makes him feel “very uneasy”.

He said: “Motorcyclists are especially vulnerable because if we end up in a pothole it could lead to serious injuries.

“We not only have to be constantly scanning for hazards such as other road users but now have to look out for the road itself

“I’ve seen multiple people saying that roads like this are the reason they’ve given up riding their motorcycles or it’s even put them off starting riding which for a motorcycle enthusiast like myself, it truly is heartbreaking.”

Since posting the video online it has received a huge reaction on social media.

One person said: “Welcome to Burnley, mate.”

Another said: “We don’t drive on the left in the UK. We drive on what’s left.”

“Where is our tax money going?” said another.

A fourth said: “I work around Burnley and Pendle and the roads are awful.”

RookieRider said: “The reaction on TikTok has been unanimous, the majority of people agree that all across the country they are being let down by their local councils and the roads are not fit for purpose.

“I’ve had multiple comments left saying that they’ve had hundreds of pounds worth of damage done to their vehicles and even some comments from cyclists saying they’ve resulted in broken bones from potholes in their areas.”

He said he feels let down by councils who fail to maintain roads.

He said: “When the roads have holes so big you can see through to the cobblestones beneath them for months, such as the road in my video, there needs to at least be temporary repairs carried out until a permanent fix can be implemented.

“Many have stated that the rising costs of council tax is not being put to good use such as maintaining the roads like it should.”

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said some repairs to the road were carried out last week, with more scheduled for the future.

A spokesperson said: "We carried out some repairs to potholes on Burnham Gate last week and are due to return to  make some further repairs on Saturday afternoon when traffic levels should be lower.

"We are aware of the condition of Burnham Gate at the junction of Accrington Road and Barracks Road and have designed a robust scheme to resurface this area.

"We are currently working to schedule this during June. We'll need to close the road overnight to carry out these repairs and will put up advance warning signs in the area nearer the time so that people can plan their journeys."

Lancashire was recently revealed as one of the UK’s pothole hotspots with 67,493 potholes reported in 2022.

This was the highest number of recorded potholes that made the top 10, but when averaged out compared to the miles of road within the county, Lancashire dropped down to third.

Joining Lancashire in the top three are the London borough of Islington and the borough of Kirklees in West Yorkshire.
