Hyndburn MP Sara Britcliffe praised volunteers who helped to raise more than £9,000 for the Turkey and Syria earthquake appeal.

The Barakah Aid event at the Al Hamza Banqueting Hall in Accrington on Saturday was held at Iftar time (fast-breaking).

The month of Ramadan began last Thursday and this was one of the major charity events to be held locally.

Special guest Sara Britcliffe MP was joined by the Vice Chairmen of the Conservative Party for Youth, The Deputy Mayor of Hyndburn Councillor Terry Hurn, wife Jean Hurn, friends Saghir Ahmed and Mohammed Yunus and Burnley Nasheed artist, Nasir Khan.

The event was hosted by Zain with popular brand Mr Tee's Ice-cream on hand to support the dinner.

Barakah Aid is a small charity was set up by a group of Muslim sisters, Farzana, Hina, Gul who  have raised thousands of pounds in recent year for a range of charitable causes.

Trustee Robina Ahmed said: “It was fantastic. A special thanks to all our supporters and especially our volunteers. They have been amazing. Without them we would not have got this far.

“Barakah Aid is successful because of our volunteers. Nobody gets paid anything and we all work voluntarily from our homes.”

Sara Britcliffe MP said: “I am just astounded how much money we have managed to raise.

“I think the ladies have been fantastic not for this event but all the different fundraising they do to get money to victims for housing, for shelter and for mental health support. Just unbelievable what we have seen here today.”

The Deputy Mayor of Hyndburn Councillor Terry Hurn added: “It is wonderful. I am in awe of you all really for what you are doing for this disaster.

“I will be spreading the word where ever I go.”

In the UK Brakah Aid have helped tackle poverty and health issues at the grassroots level, fed the homeless and worked in collaboration with other local charities. Barakah Aid said they had also worked with bigger charities reaching out to the vulnerable people in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey and Ghana.

The weekend fundraiser Iftar was exclusively for the survivors of the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria. All proceeds will provide emergency aid to them.
