It might not look too spectacular but this photograph, taken in 1954, shows one of East Lancashire’s oldest homesteads dating back more than 800 years.

It shows part of Duckworth Hall in Oswaldtwistle which was first occupied in Norman times. The Duckworth estate was part of land owned by the Knights Hospitalier, renowned for taking part in the Crusades.

The Duckworth Hall Inn, on Haslingden Road, was next to the hall and remains today is reputed to be haunted by the ghost of a Catholic priest who was imprisoned there before being executed at Whalley Abbey
