A restaurant chain which was bought out by the EG Group has been crowned 'best breakfast 2022' at the JustEat awards.

LEON, which was acquired by Blackburn's billionaire Issa brothers' EG Group in 2021, won the award for their tasty breakfast menu, which features everything from sourdough muffins to stacks and egg pots.

The JustEat website said of the winner: "LEON has the breakfast of champions. LEON coffee doesn't just taste good. It does good too.

"LEON works with the World Land Trust to buy and protect some of the world's most biologically distinct and threatened habitats. Through this partnership they have managed to save over 600 acres of rainforest."

Popular favourites also include halloumi breakfast boxes and banana and cinnamon porridge.

The Just Eat Restaurant Awards champions Britain’s favourite food spots as well as the people who make them a success.

The awards are an opportunity to recognise and reward the best of the best in food delivery and give food lovers the opportunity to support their favourites by celebrating restaurants that, in addition to providing great food, are working to reduce their environmental impact, supporting those in need, or simply raising the bar.

Founded by John Vincent, Henry Dimbleby and Chef Allegra McEvedy in 2004, Leon created the category of ‘naturally fast food’ in a bid to change people’s expectations of what was possible in quick service restaurants.

Leon has branches at Piccadilly Train Station in Manchester and Cheshire Oaks.

The company says it has been the pioneer in creating a healthy menu that tastes good and is kind to the planet, driven by a passion to help everyone eat and live well.

Mohsin and Zuber Issa, co-founders and co-chief executives of the EG Group, said in April 2021: "Leon is a fantastic brand that we have long admired.

"As established entrepreneurs in the foodservice retail market ourselves, we have a huge admiration for the business that John and the Leon team have built over the years, and firmly believe that their culture and values closely align with our own.

"The acquisition of Leon presents EG Group with a fantastic opportunity to further develop the menu offer, the various concession formats including drive thrus, and will enable us to significantly build on the existing network by exploring opportunities across our own sites along with other strategic locations.

"EG Group continues to identify innovative partnerships and acquisitions that complement our existing consumer offer and enable us to stay at the forefront of consumer trends, particularly in foodservice.

"Our equity investment in LEON is to strengthen our own participation in the fast-growing contemporary foodservice segment

"This acquisition aligns with our commitment to being a committed foodservice operator globally, delivers financial benefit to our underlying business, and supports broader commercial strategies to be able to better realise further growth opportunities.”
