The parents of a boy who suffered from a life-threatening condition have made a donation as part of East Lancashire Hospitals Trust appeal for toys and games.

Last year, Isa Adams, 13, from Blackburn, suffered from Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) and his condition became life-threatening.

PIMS is a rare complication of Covid-19 that happens weeks after someone has had the virus and causes swelling throughout the body.

Isa’s recovery was long and during his stay the children’s ward was filled with toys and resources to keep younger patients entertained but lacked games for teenage patients until a gaming cart was provided at the end of 2022.

Last week, Isa returned to the children’s ward to have his tonsils removed and whilst recovering he was given the opportunity to use the gaming card to play his favourite game – FIFA and Isa’s “face lit up and he was overjoyed.”

Seeing the difference this made, Isa’s parents, Mr and Mrs Adams got in touch with ELHT to make a donation to purchase an additional two carts for the ward.

Mr and Mrs Adam said: "The team on the children’s ward have been excellent in delivering true compassionate care to Isa and us both times we have visited.

“We genuinely thought we were going to lose him to the illness last year and we are just so grateful so the amazing team. When our son was admitted most recently, the staff recognised and remembered our Isa. That was touching in itself.

"What makes this a great journey is that we are able to relate. We have stayed before and after the gaming cart was introduced to the ward and we could see the difference it brings.

"That's why we are extremely happy to have supported ELHT&Me by gifting two further carts to make even more of a difference to future families."

A spokesperson for ELHT said: “A huge thank you for such an incredible donation that is already making a different to the children on the ward providing much-needed play and recreation! Thank you.”

ELHT have launched The Power of Play appeal to provide toys and equipment to Children and Young People’s Services across East Lancashire Hospital Trust to help reduce stress, aid recovery, and support development, to ensure young patients have the best experience possible.
