A university that was originally set up in East Lancs is set to extend its offering with a new specialist hub to offer degrees in all aspects of the sports media and business industry.

University Campus of Football Business (UCFB) is a higher education institution offering undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in football business, sport, events industries and media.

Their first campus opened in 2011 at Burnley’s Turf Moor stadium and they have since gone on to open campuses at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium and at Wembley Stadium in London.

Now, a fourth centre will help UCFB to expand their offering with a new specialist hub in Salford’s MediaCity, which will have a specific sports media training centre for both UCFB and the Global Institute of Sport (GIS).

The proposed facility, which spans almost 11,000 square feet and overlooks Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium, will specialise in the teaching of sports media, communications and broadcasting degrees.

It will include several lecture and seminar rooms as well as a study lounge and staff facilities, with capacity for up to 410 staff and students at any one time and with a further 1,000 students able to use the building for timetabled classes.

After starting at Turf Moor and relocating to Manchester in 2016, UCFB and GIS have grown to include developments in London, Manchester, Miami and Melbourne.

Brendan Flood, chairman and CEO of UCFB and GIS, said: “MediaCity is one of the world’s leading Media and Tech hubs, and we are incredibly excited to announce our plans to create an exciting new destination for our students.

“We look forward to working with Peel L &P, Salford City Council and the MediaCity family to bring these plans forward, enabling the development of the next generation of talent for the region.”

Stephen Wild, managing director of MediaCity, added: “Quay Plaza will provide a fantastic and inspirational base for UCFB’s sports media, communications, and broadcasting students.

“The BBC, ITV and dock10 are right on its doorstep as well as other educational establishments at MediaCity such as The University of Salford and University Technical College and will help secure the next generation of talent here at MediaCity.”
