A man who took police on a 10-minute 60mph car chase through the streets of Accrington has been told to “grow up” by a judge.

Luke Entwistle, 29, was pulled over by police on November 18 2021 after officers observed the car being driven slightly suspiciously.

Preston Crown Court was told that a female passenger got out of the vehicle before it sped off with police in close pursuit.

Beth Pilling, prosecuting, said: “The defendant proceeded to drive with no lights on, on the wrong side of the road and round roundabouts the wrong way.

“The car was eventually stung when it drove down a canal tow path with the defendant getting out and trying to run before being arrested by police officers who had the dogs with them.

“The vehicle was found to be registered in either the defendant's father or brother’s name and it was discovered that the defendant was disqualified from driving and had been since 2010.”

CCTV footage played to the court showed the vehicle, being driven by Entwistle, reaching speeds of more than 60mph through the residential streets of Accrington at around 10.30pm, when there was still traffic on the roads.

Ms Pilling said: “When the defendant was interviewed the following morning he said he wasn’t the driver but a passenger, and the driver had run off in the opposite direction to him, but he later admitted he was the driver.”

Entwistle has 32 convictions for 78 previous offences, and was last before the courts at the beginning of February charged with criminal damage for which he was handed a conditional discharge for 24 months.

Judge Guy Mathieson told Entwistle to “grow up” and in sentencing said: “So you’re 30 next week?

“Grow up. From everything I have seen and read about you it seems you don’t care or are not bothered.

“It’s like you don’t consider the law applies to you, that’s the attitude you have. That stinks, at 30-years-old. Grow up.

“It’s appalling what I saw on the CCTV but there are two things that save you – your guilty plea and the fact it took so long to come to court.”

Entwistle, of Avenue Parade, Accrington, pleaded guilty to driving while disqualified and dangerous driving and was handed a nine month sentence suspended for 12 months, and was told to complete 120 hours of unpaid work.

He was also disqualified from driving for a further 18 months and will need to sit an extended retest before he can legally get behind the wheel again.
