The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen got to sample a range of foods and delicacies at a fun day in Blackburn.

Cllr Suleman Khonat joined hundreds of people from across the borough at an event to help raise funds for the Turkey and Syria Earthquake Appeal organised by Blackburn4Charity with funds donated to Aid 4 Ummah.

The event at Bangor Street Community Centre on Saturday featured a variety of small stalls and was being organised by volunteers from Blackburn.

Over £5,000 was raised during the day.

Organisers, Rizwana Zaahid and Shenaz Patel said: “A huge thanks to everyone who supported the fun day which was organised at short notice.

“Thanks to all volunteers, stalls, sponsors and donors and everyone who shared the poster to get the word out.

“It was really good to see many people come and support the event and donate towards a good cause.”

The magnitude 7.8 and 7.5 quakes struck nine hours apart in south-eastern Turkey and Syria on February 6.

More than 40,000 people have killed, with the death toll expected to rise considerably as search teams find more bodies, and towns and cities inhabited by millions reduced to fragments of concrete and twisted metal.
