Pupils and staff at a Brierfield school raised more than £1,700 to help victims of the Turkey and Syria earthquake.

Pupils were encouraged to wear red at Marsden Heights Community College during a school day and raised £1786.23 towards the appeal.

Headteacher Alyson Littlewood said: "Over the week pupils and staff had become increasingly concerned about what they were seeing and hearing about the impact that the earthquakes had had in Turkey and Syria.

"Wearing red symbolised the school’s commitment to support and help with the Red Crescent and the Red Cross, both of whom are right in the centre of this disaster."

Ms Littlewood added: "Pupils brought in their donations and wore red as part of their outfit or wore a red ribbon in solidarity with not just other schools, but with other countries.

"Charity work is important for all pupils to undertake as it enables us to think of others and to help us in putting others first but it was even more important for Marsden Heights to offer support as there are both Turkish and Syrian pupils at the school who have been deeply affected by this natural disaster and those pupils have really appreciated the support shown to the victims of both countries.
