Vigil being held in Blackburn for Turkey and Syria earthquake

Appeals and collections are taking place across the region to help victims of the earthquakes in Turkey and Syria.

Emergency crews are continuing to search the rubble, four days after the catastrophic earthquake which has now killed more than 21,000 people across two countries.

The 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit the border region between Turkey and Syria, an area with a population of 13.5 million.

Turkey’s disaster management agency said nearly 75,000 have been injured. No figures have been released on how many have been left homeless, but the agency said more than 75,000 survivors have been evacuated to other provinces.

More than 3,300 have been confirmed killed on the other side of the border in war-torn Syria.

Volunteers are hosting a number of appeals to raise money for those affected.

  • People can donate much needed essentials to Audley Community Centre and Masjid e Saliheen in Blackburn. Volunteers are also wanted to help pack the items in to boxes ready to be loaded onto a container.

  • A vigil is taking place for victims of the earthquake at 7pm today (Friday) outside Blackburn Town Hall. Yesetrday (Thursday) evening the Leader of the Council, Cllr Phil Riley led a one minute silence for all the victims of the disaster.

  • St Silas CE Primary School in Blackburn had a non-uniform day today (Friday) to collect much needed supplies such as tinned and dried foods, nappies, clothing and toiletries. The school wished to thank all staff pupils and parents and the local community for their tremendous effort.

  • Donations are being sought to assist relief work in Gazientep, Sanliurfa and Adiyaman and Kahta. Salim Bhai Jogee who has contacts in the area said early donations have already been sent to these cities, and those contacts have started to buy and distribute essential items to people most in need. Members of the team are looking to go out to Turkey as soon as possible to hand deliver the aid.
  • Blackburn based charity Aid 4 Ummah said they are on the ground delivering  donations to earthquake victims.  The charity said they are distributing food parcels and winter blankets. You can find out more here - www.aid4ummah.org

  • A team from the Masjid E Raza, on Balaclava Street are to visit the affected areas later this month. The appeal is being led by Musabhai Haldarvi, 71, who has been travelling to disaster zones to distribute aid for over three decades.

  • A football tournament is being held in Bolton to help raise money for the disaster appeal. Players must be aged over 16 and entry fee is £70 per team.
