POLICE who went to assist a teenage girl who was being assaulted by her partner ended up arresting her.

Blackburn magistrates heard Morganne Shread interfered when an officer tried to arrest her partner.

She took the officer's torch out of his vest and threw it at him, distracting him enough for her partner to make a run for it.

As the officer rugby tackled the male he cut his head on a display stand.

Shreard, 19, of Oakdene Avenue, Accrington, pleaded guilty to assaulting an emergency worker. She was given a conditional discharge for six months and ordered to pay £22 victim surcharge.

David O'Donnell, prosecuting, said police were called to Townsmoor Retail Park in Blackburn where Shread was the victim of an attack by her boyfriend.

"She attempted to disrupt any attempt the officers made to arrest her boyfriend," said Mr O'Donnell.

Richard Sibeon, defending, said his client had been 17 at the time of the incident in June 2021 and he was not aware of any explanation for why it had taken so long to come to court.

"Clearly she did not want her then boyfriend to be arrested, despite the altercation that had been going on between them," said Mr Sibeon.

"She felt a loyalty to him and very unwisely got involved."

He said Shread had not been in any trouble before or after the incident.

"She is looking to make a career in child care and is worried how this conviction will impact on that," he said.
