A man who admitted to having a sexual interest in girls as young as five has avoided a jail sentence.

Robert McGregor was found with indecent images on his devices by police in December 2021.

Burnley Crown Court heard that the 57-year-old had been in online communications with an undercover police officer, where he discussed having an interest in “young people” and also “family”.

He made indecent comments to the undercover officer, which prosecuting barrister Stephen Parker said referred to children under the age of 10.

Mr Parker said: “The police attended his property on December 10 2021, with the defendant being co-operative.

“When his devices were analysed they found eight category A images, six moving and two still; six category B images, one moving and five still; 17 category C images, two moving and 15 still; and one image of extreme pornography.

“The age range of the children in the images was between six and 13 years.

“He made fairly substantial admissions and admitted to being interested in girls between the ages of five and 12 but said he would never act upon his desires as he could never harm anyone.

“Although he did admit to getting sexual gratification from images of young children.”

McGregor, of Co-operation Street, Bacup, has one previous conviction for a similar offence dating back to 2013 for which he received a suspended sentence.

Defending, Ayesha Smart said her client was remorseful and had deep regret and shame about his behaviour.

She said: “He has sought intervention from his GP and has talked about psychotherapy, medication and chemical castration.”

Sentencing, Judge Sara Dodd said: “It’s deeply troubling that anyone has a sexual interest in children and you need to address the root cause of your viewing of this sort of material.”

McGregor was handed a three year community order, told to carry out 10 rehabilitation activity days, and participate in a sex offender treatment programme.

He was also made subject to a 12 year sexual harm prevention order and told to sign the sex offenders register for five years.
