This week Prince Harry and Meghan Markle released their long-awaited series about their lives.

It made the front pages of the newspapers and the familiar writers and commentators were out in force to defend the Royal family. Elsewhere, we had people picking over what every little details means to find some pointless clue that will help explain this whole debacle.

Most people will probably ignore the series as we already know it doesn’t really interest us. However, judging from the amount of media exposure given to them you would think we all mad for Harry and Meghan.

At one point it led news bulletins. A reality TV show led the news agenda for several days.

Here we are with people really having to switch off their heating in the midst of a major cold snap and we are being fed utter nonsense.

Let’s face it this is an unhealthy obsession. With the amount of rubbish that is posted on a daily basis you would think the couple were public enemy number one.

The facts are these. If they choose to make a programme for Netflix they are entitled to do so. If they choose to rubbish the Royal family every so often then so what? We do it all the time and have done so for years.

If they choose to move out of the country and are welcomed elsewhere then ‘good luck’. If they want to make some extra money then who honestly cares.

We say very little when we use Royal family members to cosy up to despot rulers so we can sell some weapons.

The reason why large elements of the media are so wholly against them is that they have brought to the fore elitism and racism that exists in our society. And this involves their own institutions too.

We do what we do best when faced with such issues - we turn on the accuser. We make out the accuser is a hypocrite and try our best to discredit that person.

We also like to pitch ‘nice Royals’ who play ball against those who get far more publicity.

Despite what might be said we know that British society is welcoming and tolerant.

The common Brit couldn’t care less what the couple do or say. Barring his Majesty the King most of opt for a visit from Harry and Meghan over any other couple as we know it would get far more likes on social media.

Yes, we are that superficial.
