A councillor representing St Andrews ward in Oswaldtwistle is making one of his top priorities tackling fly tipping and littering in Hyndburn.
Conservative Cllr Steven Smithson is aiming to tackle the concerns of residents who come to him on a frequent basis with their fly tipping issues, and he has already seen an improvement.
He said: “As Portfolio Holder for the Environmental Services at Hyndburn Borough Council, one of my top priorities is to tackle fly tipping and littering in Hyndburn, which I know is a concern for residents.
“Fly tipping and littering damages the environment and blights our communities.
“Fly tipping and littering is a problem across the country not just in Hyndburn; when I first became Portfolio Holder yes it was a problem, but we seem to be getting on top of it now.
“Residents contact me regularly from across the borough regarding fly-tipping issues normally near their homes and ask for my help to remove the fly-tipping and investigate and find evidence.”
Cllr Smithson said there are initiatives and plans already underway to tackle the problems in the area.
He said: “Our waste enforcement team are out every day across Hyndburn dealing with reports of fly-tipping and investigating.
“For the last month I have been out with the waste enforcement team and have seen first-hand the excellent work these guys are doing, and they have my full support to take further action against those who continue to blight our borough.
“A brand-new guide to recycling and waste will be landing on doorsteps of Hyndburn before Christmas.
“The information reminds residents that everyone has a responsibility to dispose of their waste properly to help keep Hyndburn clean and tidy.
“We are also currently going through the legal process of looking at fines and we are hoping to start issuing fines shortly.
“Hyndburn Borough Council offers a free Bulky Waste Collection, and we are the only borough in Lancashire to offer this as a free service.”
Anyone who sees fly tipping should contact their council to get the rubbish cleared away, which could lead to prosection of those responsible.
