A Blackburn with Darwen councillor joined a host of famous faces from across the UK as he picked up his MBE.

Cllr Zamir Khan was invited to Windsor Castle to receive his MBE medallion from His Majesty King Charles III on Tuesday.

The Labour ward councillor for Blackburn Central was awarded an MBE for his services to the Blackburn Muslim Burial Society and to the wider community, particularly during the Covid pandemic.

Cllr Khan was joined by wife Rahat Sultana Khan, sons Zahim, Wahib and daughter Bushra at the ceremony.

Cllr Khan said: “It was a huge honour receiving my MBE from the King on behalf of all the family, colleagues and the local community.

“We had a wonderful day in Windsor Castle where we met with many others who also received their MBE as such as US Open winning tennis star Emma Raducanu, former footballer Gary Bennett and Hugh Morris, an ex-cricketer.

“We later had a big family gathering in my cousin’s house in Kingsbury, London.

“We also visited the Houses of Parliament and Houses of Lord as part of a tour alongside Blackburn MP Kate Hollern, Lord Wajid Khan and Imran Hussain MP.”

Coun Khan has served as a local councillor for almost 20 years.
