Slippery rails have led to the cancellation of multiple trains running through East Lancashire tonight.

Train company Northern have confirmed that the Clitheroe to Rochdale line has been blocked tonight (Monday, November 28) due to a slippery rail between Blackburn and Clitheroe.

Northern have advised that train services running through those stations will be cancelled or delayed by up to an hour.

Disruption is expected until 10pm tonight.

As of just after 7:15pm tonight, Northern reported that Network Rail were due on site shortly.

The 18:23 Clitheroe to Rochdale train was reported as being delayed at Whalley Station and the 19:08 Clitheroe to Rochdale was being delayed at Clitheroe Station.

Slippery rails are caused by trains passing over fallen leaves on the rails, with the heat and weight of the trains creating a thin, slippery layer on the rail.

Network Rail say that this is the equivalent of black ice on the roads.

Northern have been contacted for further information.
