Students and their families have been learning how to cook meals for under £5 in classes put on by their school.

Blackburn Central High School (BCHS) has invited pupils and their families to their new classes where they can cook 'hearty and nourishing' meals for under £5.

Andrew George, teacher of Food Technology, donated his time to teach the classes, while Julie Pearson and Julie Osman, charity champions at the Morrisons supermarkets in Blackburn and Great Harwood, donated all the items and ingredients.

Headteacher Shanaz Hussain said: “We are more than aware, everyday in our school family, that at home it is a struggle to be economical when feeding children, keeping them clothed and warm at home.

"We are reaching out and helping in any way we can.

"While the lessons are informal, they are teaching basic cooking skills and it is encouraging to see our students come along to learn valuable cooking skills with their relatives.

"Eating together is a family-centred time, and especially when it is cooked, using fresh ingredients with no additives or preservatives.

"The story of how the meal was made together is one that can be shared whilst eating these dishes is memory forming and so special."

Lancashire Telegraph:

Miriam Rathore, Pastoral Manager and Community Lead, added: “At BCHS, we are always seeking innovative ways to support our students and their families.

"We were blown away by the kindness shown by the champions at Morrisons; when we reached out to them, they were happy to help.

"Julie Osman from the Great Harwood branch came and rolled her sleeves up and joined in on our first session. On behalf of all of us at BCHS, thanks so much."

The school has small number of spaces left on the cooking classes, and any families which wish to attend are asked to email mrathore524@bchs.co.uk.
