A MAN walking on Morecambe promenade was attacked for no reason by a Burnley woman.

Blackburn magistrates heard Kirsty Bridge punched the victim three or four times and when he fell to the floor kicked him and stamped on his head.

Bridge, 32, of Hollin Greave Road, Burnley, pleaded guilty to assault. She was jailed for 16 weeks.

Imposing an immediate prison sentence District Judge Alex Boyd said it had been a "very unpleasant and serious" offence.

"It is only by luck that someone whose head was kicked and stamped on wasn't caused very serious injuries," he said.

Suzanne Ludlow, prosecuting, said it had been a very strange incident which occurred on Morecambe promenade.

She said the victim did not know the defendant but did know the woman she was with.

"She walked up to him and asked for some change at which point the defendant asked if she should punch him," said Miss Ludlow.

"She then handed her can of lager to her friend before punching him three or four times and kicking him to the leg. When he went to the floor she kicked him to the head and stamped on his head."

Miss Ludlow said the incident had occurred in broad daylight and was witnessed by a lot of people who found it distressing.

Bridge had failed to turn up for two appointments with the probation service for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Gareth Price, defending, said his client had not instructed him to ask for another adjournment for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

He said she only had one previous conviction for violence and that had been in 2005.

"She is very fortunate the injuries were not more serious than they were," said Mr Price.
