An artist who would ‘bring Hyndburn to life’ with his sketches of Clayton and Accrington has died over the weekend.

Steve Crowther will be remembered by thousands of members in the Hyndburn Facebook group, where he would regularly share his colourful sketches of back streets, landmarks and even pet portraits.

The former technology teacher, who had his own studio at the Haworth Art Gallery, found inspiration while in lockdown, and not wanting to stop drawing, he started drawing the places he would see while out walking in Clayton-Le-Moors.

His drawings would receive an overwhelming amount of positive feedback every time he would share his latest artwork.

Steven’s wife shared the devastating news on his Facebook account.

She wrote: “This is Joanne, Steve's wife. I'm so sorry to have to tell you that Steve passed away peacefully at the weekend with his family around him.

“As Steve was an artist who loved colour, and who made Hyndburn beautiful one painting at a time, we would like the funeral to be a celebration of this and would encourage anyone attending to wear something colourful for him.

“Family flowers only please, any donations can be made to East Lancs Hospice.”

The news has saddened the community with more than 500 people, some from as far as Australia, sharing their sympathies in the comments.

One person wrote: “So sorry to hear this. We met Steve a few times at his studio and have some of his fantastic drawings.

"Some people leave a lasting impression when you meet them and that was Steve. A lovely, lovely man. Love to you all.”

A former student of the artist shared the impact Steve had on him.

He wrote: “I am so sorry to hear this. Steve was a wonderful teacher and such a character.

“He left an indelible impression on myself, and I am sure everyone else he taught at KGS. Above all, he was great fun, sharing his subject in such an engaging way.”

Another heartfelt comment says: “It always raised my spirits when I'd get on Facebook rare as it is and seen his paintings and drawings every time. I will miss seeing these. I'm sorry for your loss. Will be thinking of you all.”

A funeral service will be held at Accrington Crematorium at 2.20pm on Monday, November 14.
