Colne Park Primary wins Gold School Games Mark award

Colne Park Primary School on Rutland Street has been awarded the Gold School Games Mark through Lancashire School Games.

The school has a sports gym named after one of their past pupils Steven Burke MBE, an Olympic Gold medallist in cycling, who was known as the Colne Cyclone before his retirement.

Headteacher Sarah Midgley said that the achievement has come thanks to the school's hard work and determination to make physical education and a healthy lifestyle a priority.

The gym contains boxing and outdoor gym equipment which pupils have access to during the day and the older children can use this facility each morning before school starts.

Sports Coach, Mr Aspin, who leads PE across the school, hosts free sports afterschool clubs including multi-sports, football, netball and multi-skills.

One of the most popular events is the SEND Inclusion sessions which are aimed at children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to encourage their interest in physical activity.

One of the PE Leads, Tara Newman added: “Our commitment to Physical Education continues in our playground; We have trim trails, clamber stacks and interactive playground markings that encourage physical activity.

“We also have Activall and Anomaly Boards, these ensure that children have active and enjoyable break times that enhance our curriculum.”

The school is already planning their next phase which will see the introduction of a bike shelter, a range of playground toys and new outdoor gym equipment which will be installed around the school playground.
