An application has been submitted to the council to transform land surrounding a mosque, creating 49 new car parking spaces, a children’s play area and a 3G sports pitch.
The plans were submitted to Pendle Council at the end of September by Ishtiaq Mohammed, for the Madina Mosque in Manchester Road, Nelson.
The remodelling of the land surrounding the mosque also includes improved landscaping, access paths with lighting, steps within the woods, a water fountain, and a retaining wall.

IT would also include benches, an enclosed children's play area, a 3G sports pitch where a removable marquee could be erected occasionally for events, the removal of some vegetation, and wildflower sowing.
The mosque is sited in the Grade-II listed former Spring Cottage, and is also used as a community centre.
The building had a lot of renovation work to allow it to be successfully returned to the community, and the surrounding land, which the application relates to, is significant in size, and once formed the gardens of Spring Cottage.
The current use of the land is minimal as much of the it is overgrown, so the only area in real use at present is the existing hard landscaping, which is in poor condition but is used for parking by users of the Masjid.
Anyone wishing to comment on the plans should do so in writing or via the council’s planning portal by October 26.
