A school is offering free budget cooking lessons, every month for parents and carers of students to help with rising costs of food.

The sessions at Blackburn Central High School (BCHS) will be focusing on cooking 'nourishing, filling meals for families on a budget'.

Community Lead, Miriam Rathore, said: "With the cost of living rising, parents are struggling and often choosing between heating or eating, initiatives like this are not only necessary but often critical."

Community Champion Julie Osman, at Morrisons Great Harwood will be joining in on the first session.

Ms Rathore added: "We were totally blown away by the generosity of Morrisons and they have committed to supporting this new venture at BCHS.

“They have been incredibly supportive with a number of our projects, including food parcels during lockdown and our popular Hug in a Mug. I am looking forward to working with them with our £5 meals.”

Headteacher Shanaz Hussain said: "This is another way of bringing us all even closer together within our school community, there are staff and students' families who are having to tighten their belts and the cost-of-living crisis is affecting so many, we are always looking to help our families.”

Places are still available - all meals are halal, with the first meal being a warming Minestrone soup.

The only required item is a Tupperware dish, or another suitable container.

The first session of ‘£5 Meals’ will be on Wednesday, October 12, from 3pm to 4pm and anyone interested in taking part can call Ms Rathore on 01254 505700.
