As Halloween approaches, many will be looking for a fright, but did you know the most haunted place in the UK is allegedly in East Lancashire?

Pendle Hill has been named as the most ‘haunted spot’ of the UK by holiday lettings company holidaycottages.co.uk.

Renowned for its links to witchcraft and devil worship, Pendle Hill in Lancashire is a very spooky site.

The area is believed to be haunted by the spirits of the Pendle Witches who were tried in 1612 for the murders of 10 people by the use of witchcraft.

The Pendle Witch story is one of the most famous and well documented set of witch trials by the clerk to the court, Thomas Potts.

Of the 12 accused of witchcraft, 10 were executed by hanging for their crimes whilst one was found not guilty and another died in prison.

It is said visitors have noticed an intense feeling of anger when exploring the grounds, so if you’re visiting, watch out for the witches.

The well-known location has played host to many ghost hunts, while the village of Barley is still a popular tourist location because of the history.

Named as the second spookiest place is the Jamaica Inn, Cornwall, which is believed to be haunted by a highwayman and a murdered smuggler.

In third, fourth and fifth place were Blickling Hall, Norfolk, where Henry VIII’s second wife Anne Boleyn was beheaded, Berry Pomeroy Castle, Devon, which is supposedly haunted by the Blue Lady and the White Lady, and Dunster Castle, Somerset, where visitors say they have witnessed an eerie man in green walking around.
