The search is on to find the county’s most deserving youngsters for the 2023 Lancashire Young Citizen of the Year award.

If you know someone, aged 19 or under, who has done something selfless for another person, organisation or their local community, the police want to hear from you.

Applications are now being accepted and can be submitted anytime up until January 31 2023.

Winners and runners up will be selected by the High Sheriff and a panel of judges from the Lancashire Partnership Against Crime (LANPAC), Lancashire Constabulary and the University of Central Lancashire.

The winner will receive £500 along with a specially commissioned trophy and certificate from the High Sheriff and Chief Constable Chris Rowley. Two runners up will also receive £100 and a certificate.

Chief Constable Rowley said: “It’s always a privilege to hear about so many inspiring young people who are doing exceptional things to make a difference in their communities.

"Often, these young people don’t even recognize the huge positive impact that they are making.

"The Young Citizen Awards are a great opportunity for us to recognise and celebrate them, and I would urge anyone who knows a young person who has made an outstanding contribution to their community to submit a nomination.”

Two East Lancashire youngsters were named in the awards this year.

Hanzalah Khan, 15, from Burnley, was a runner-up, and was congratulated for his charity work for Community Outreach Project, Rise Support and Inspiring Grace as well as his volunteering with the food banks scheme and working as a marshal at the local vaccination centre.

In third place was Jacob Reddy, 17, from Blackburn who was praised for his fundraising in aid of Derian House Children’s Hospice, Chorley, where his brother, Joseph, was cared for during his short life.

The winner of the 2022 award was Emma Aggrey, from Burscough, who topped a list of more than 30 inspiring young people from across the county who have made a real difference in their communities in the last 12 months.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Central Lancashire, Professor Graham Baldwin, said: “The High Sheriff of Lancashire’s Young Citizen Awards is a fantastic initiative, providing fitting recognition for the selfless, generous and sometimes heroic acts of the county’s young people.

"We have supported the awards for several years and are proud to do so again, joining the High Sheriff and Lancashire Constabulary in celebrating these impressive youngsters and their achievements.”

High Sheriff of Lancashire, Martin Ainscough, said: “I am really looking forward to reading the nominations and the stories about how young people in Lancashire are taking responsibility for the welfare of others and proving themselves worthy of recognition.

"The Lancashire Young Citizen of the year Award is a wonderful opportunity to reward and appreciate the extraordinary work that so many young people do throughout the county to help others and reduce crime.”

Approval of a parent or guardian is needed for the nomination, subsequent publicity and any future events involving the finalists.
