MORE women are reaching the top at Blackburn with Darwen Council, a new study has revealed.

Analysis by the GMB Union for the year ending April 2007, has listed Blackburn with Darwen Council as 18th out of 149 English councils for high-earning women.

Of the top 5 per cent best-paid workers at the council, 51per cent are women.

Kamaljeet Jandu, GMB National Equality & Diversity Officer said, "Women in local government have started to break through the glass ceiling into the top jobs. It is no accident that this has happened where trade union organisation is strong and fights for equal opportunities."

The council's most successful women include financial services director Denise Park, director of ICT Karen Sharples, and communications director Alison Milner.

There are 22 councils in England where more than half of the top 5per cent of earners are women, up from 16 councils a year ago.

Lancashire County Council came in at number 78, with 44.6per cent.
