A COUPLE had a "lucky escape" after a discarded cigarette set fire to a bin and a carpet, before it was discovered.
Fire crews were called to the blaze in Bridge Street in Darwen at 10.30pm on Sunday night. Watch manager Tony Spencer said the occupants of the house were about to go to bed before smelling smoke in the kitchen.
He said they were able to put out the small blaze, which had spread to the carpet after a cigarette was put in a bin. The house did not have a smoke alarm.
Mr Spencer said: "The people in the house were very lucky that they noticed the smoke before going to bed. I would urge all smokers to make sure that cigarettes are properly extinguished in an ash tray."
