SIX Pendle youngsters are to be awarded a total of £2,000 for their sporting excellence.

James Blackburn, 14, Matthew Tindall, 16, Katie Doney, 16, Jonathan Bradley, 17, Ashley Honeyman, 15, and Holly Broughton, 13, are being awarded their bursaries tomorrow at Nelson Town Hall by the Mayor of Pendle, Coun Allan Buck.

The teenagers aged from 13 to 17 have been given between £145 and £400 towards sports equipment, clothing and accommodation to help them in their dreams of becoming professional sports stars.

They have also been given one-to-one sessions with Pendle Leisure Trust Scientists to help them with their training and free passes to Pendle Leisure Trust facilities.

The Mayor said: "These young athletes have done extremely well to get where they are and they should be very proud.

"The aim of the Talented Athletes Scheme is to encourage our gifted youngsters to excel in their chosen sport.
