A hotel and spa says fireworks set off on its grounds "had nothing to do" with the hotel after a number of local residents reacted angrily to the late night light show.

Stanley House Hotel and Spa, which is based just outside Blackburn, said it was aware of the incident where fireworks were being set off around midnight on Sunday, September 11.

Following an investigation the hotel said the matter had now been reported to authorities, and the fireworks had been set off by "a group of unidentified individuals".

Concerns were raised from local residents in Mellor who heard fireworks coming from the direction of the hotel late at night, and also claimed the show was inappropriate during a national period of mourning.

The hotel said: “The fireworks were not part of any organised event at Stanley House Hotel and Spa.

“The latest event to take place at the hotel was concluded by 11pm, after which no guests remained on the property.

"Hotel CCTV footage confirms the time of the incident. The matter has been reported to the authorities.

“We understand how upsetting the incident may have been during this national period of mourning, and wish to express that we are equally disappointed with the behaviour of these individuals.”

Wedding venues and hotels across the region have looked to tone down events during the national period of mourning following the death of Queen Elizabeth II last Thursday aged 96.

Earlier this week the Ferraris Country House in the Ribble Valley said they would use ‘reduced noise type fireworks’ for a special display in memory of a loved one who had died.

The hotel said a fireworks display had been organised display in memory of the bride’s grandfather who "should have been walking her down the aisle but sadly passed at the beginning of the year".

The hotel posted: “The couple find themselves torn as they do not wish anyone to consider they’re being disrespectful in a period of national mourning or to cause offence, but also see many other large events going ahead locally and nationally.

"While they themselves are deeply saddened by the loss Her Majesty, they would like to go ahead with their celebrations as planned.

“The fireworks are the reduced noise type and we will be informing local residents should the display go ahead.”

The hotel added: “Kieran and Georgia would like to say that they are extremely grateful for your unified show of support, understanding and kindness, and are very pleased their firework tribute will go ahead as planned.

“They would also like to thank everyone for their lovely messages and well wishes, they were very touched by them.”
