A year head at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School (QEGS) in Blackburn has spoken of his "pride" as pupils celebrated their GCSE results.
Overall, 32 per cent of pupils achieved at least one grade 8 or 9, the very highest attainment grades, with 53 per cent of pupils achieving at least one grade 7 or higher.
Eighty-one per cent gained at least five grades 4 and above which is an amazing achievement considering QEGS offers a traditional set of GCSE subjects, with pupils taking 10 or 11 GCSE subjects including compulsory languages and humanities alongside the core subjects of English, mathematics and the sciences.
The combined English GCSE grades were extremely strong with the percentage of pupils achieving grades 9 to 5 and grades 9 to 4 being 77 per cent and 89 per cent respectively.
Head of Year 11 Mr Conefrey congratulated the pupils for their attitude to learning during the pandemic.
He said: “Some of them found it quite stressful coming into the exams. I have to say they all came into the exams with a really positive attitude.
“Even though there were a few upset people sitting the exams because of the stress of it, we gave them a lot of support and they really really gave it their all and I couldn’t be more proud of them.
“On top of missing the exams and not being used to sitting exams they missed so much school.”

The school said in a statement: “We are delighted that the hard work, resilience and commitment of our pupils has been rewarded with such excellent results.
