A MAN who stole a Peaky Blinders board game from a comic store threatened to stab a member of staff who challenged him.

Blackburn magistrates heard Keith Garrihy did not actually produce a weapon but put his hand near his pocket causing the storekeeper to fear for his safety.

Garrihy, 25, of Fielding Crescent, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to theft of a board game belonging to Naser Rasool and using threatening behaviour. He was jailed for eight weeks after the magistrates heard he was subject to prison licence at the time of the offence. He was ordered to pay £100 compensation on release.

Will Alexander, prosecuting, said Garrihy made attempts to pay for the board game but his card was declined.

"He then walked out with the game and the storekeeper went to detain him," said Mr Alexander. "The defendant turned and said he had a knife and if the shop owner came near him he would stab him. He put his hand near his pocket but no knife was actually seen."

Gareth Price, defending, said the comment about the knife was made but no knife was produced or found.

"He says he wasn't in possession of a knife," said Mr Price.

Imposing an immediate prison sentence, District Judge Alex Boyd said the fear of being stabbed was as serious a threat as you could have in his view.
