AN all-star line-up will be rooting for a world record bid to assemble the most witches in one spot - in the shadow of Pendle Hill.

Supporters of Pendleside Hospice have conjured up their own Witch Festival for their crack at entering the Guinness Book of Records.

And they want as many volunteers to turn up as possible.

And from Elvis impersonator Andy Brown to Barrowford Community Choir, entertainers hope the Saturday, September 17 gathering - and the record bid at Barrowford Park - will be a spooky success.

A spokesman for Pendleside said: "At the event we aim to break a world record by organising the largest gathering of people dressed as witches – hopefully 2022 to coincide with the year.

"During the count for the world record attempt starting at 3pm the gathering of people dressed as witches will be entertained by Forever Steel Band, Empower HQ and Basically Cheer.

"Emmerdale star and children’s book author Samantha Giles who plays Bernice Blackstock in the ITV soap, is helping to spearhead the campaign along with Pendle Witches expert and tour guide Simon Entwistle.

"It is hoped the the event will raise around £100,000 towards maintaining the services Pendleside offers to people with life-limiting illnesses in the Burnley and Pendle area."

Acts for the day, which starts at 1pm, have been brought together by Lee Rothwell, of Burnley Leisure and Culture, with retro DJs Paul Taylor and Matty Robinson drafted in to bring the proceedings to a close.

Earlier Barrowford Community Choir, led by sisters Beth Shutt and Jane Burby, will kick off the festival, followed by indie-pop singer songwriter Lucas Watts and the soulful balladeer and indie rocker Callum Spencer.

Later The Voices of Yorkshire, featuring singers of choirs from across West Yorkshire, performing pop, rock, swing and soul will feature before Elvis, alias Andy Brown, takes a turn in the spotlight.

His classic turn will be followed by popular East Lancs singer-songwriter Tom Scothern and his band, before grunge rockers Scarlet and Paul Taylor and Matty Robinson's Ibiza anthems.

Before the event begins there will also be a circular sponsored walk between Barrowford Park, Barley and Roughlee.

Festival-goers will see a large children’s area, refreshment stalls, a beer tent and gin bar and face-painting.

Samantha Giles will also be available to sign copies of her book Rosemary and the Pendle Witches.

Tickets to the event are £15 for adults and £10 for children. There are also family tickets at a reduced cost. Included is the official witch’s outfit of hat, cloak and broomstick. Only people in the official outfit can be counted for the world record bid.
