A man wanted for domestic violence offences ran from police but was captured by a police dog.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, officers were out searching for a Burnley man wanted for domestic violence offences, but were unsuccessful in their hunt for him.

Police Dog Viper and his handler were called out to assist and the dog cleverly picked up a scent in the back alleys.

PD Viper quickly located the man hiding in a back yard around 500 metres away and he was successfully detained.

Much to everyone’s surprise, the suspect complimented the dog’s detective skills despite being caught and said: “That dog’s amazing!”

A spokesperson for the police said: “A male in Burnley, wanted for domestic violence offences fled from officers in the early hours to avoid capture.

"Officers were out searching on foot for some time but no trace of him could be found. The male had made good escape - or so he thought!

“Local patrols requested the assistance of the police dog unit.

"PD Viper and his handler arrived on scene and made to the last sighting of the male.

"Viper picked up a scent in the back alleys.

“The hunt was on. Viper, determined to do a good job for us, located the male hidden in a back yard some 500 metres away.

"The male was detained and showed his appreciation at the skill of the dog. "That dog's amazing!" He said. We agree.

“Without doubt, the male would not have been found without Viper's nose. What a clever boy. Extra treats and playtime for you.

“The male was interviewed and has been bailed pending a decision from the Crown Prosecution Service.”
