Police have warned residents about an alleged scammer doing the rounds in Blackburn.

Over the weekend, officers received reports about a man who had been knocking on doors in the town asking householders for £20 as he'd 'run out of petrol'.

Police told residents the fuel story was 'completely false' as he had been seen leaving in a car, and were advising people not to hand over any cash.

The man has been described as Asian, in his 40s, of heavy build, with a short beard.

PC Emma Turner from the North Blackburn policing team said: "Just a quick alert to let you know about a scammer in the area.

"Reports are coming through of a male knocking on doors asking for £20 as he has run out of petrol.

"This part is completely false he hasn't run out of fuel so please do not part with your money.

"He is described as an Asian male in his 40s, heavy build and usually leaves in a car.

"He usually has a short beard.

"If he knocks on your door please do not give him any money and report him to the police on 101.

"We are actively gathering evidence at the moment and it is important we know where he's been so we can gather the evidence."
