Motorists have been warned of delays and congestion on the M6 after a lorry hit a bridge.

Two of three lanes are closed on the M6 southbound between junction 28 for Leyland and junction 27 for Standish after a lorry hit a bridge.

This is in addition to an earlier incident in which delays and congestion were reported between junctions 29 and 28 southbound.

Initially, live traffic updates suggested there were around seven minutes of delays on the M6 southbound between junction 29 and 28, but it is now estimated there are around 42 minutes of delays up to junction 30 for the M61.

Traffic is also building through Clayton-le-Woods as motorists try to avoid the incident.

Emergency bridge repairs are being carried out and it is expected traffic conditions will return to normal before 3pm.
